12 Finals Care Package Ideas, With Real Prices

A solid finals care package covers four things: sleep, study supplies, shelf-stable snacks, and something warm to drink at midnight. The 12 picks below include brand-site prices checked Oct 2026, from $8.25 (highlighters) to $39.00 (a blackout sleep mask). Four items from this list total $52.18 before shipping. Ship by USPS Ground Advantage at least a week before the first exam, and the box lands while the student still has time to use it.

How these picks were chosen

Every item is small enough for a medium flat-rate-size box. Prices come from each brand's own product page, checked Oct 17, 2026, and exclude shipping and tax. Specs (noise reduction, capacity, caffeine content) are listed as the brands state them. We did not lab-test, open, or use-test any of these products. Roon, a caffeine pouch we make, is item 11 on this list, and this page links to it. Every number below comes from published product pages, so you can verify it yourself.

Sleep and quiet

Sleep matters more than one extra cram session. A Carnegie Mellon-led study in PNAS (more than 600 first-year students, five studies, three universities) found each hour of lost sleep corresponded to a 0.07-point drop in end-of-term GPA, with students averaging about 6.5 hours a night.

1. Loop Quiet 2 earplugs, $24.95. Reusable silicone earplugs with a carry case. Loop rates them at 24 dB (SNR) noise reduction with multiple ear-tip sizes. Good for shared dorm rooms and crowded library floors. Skip these if the student needs to hear conversations while studying; Loop's Engage 2 ($34.95, 16 dB SNR) filters background noise while keeping speech audible.

2. Manta Sleep Mask, $39.00. An adjustable eye mask Manta calls "100% blackout" with zero pressure on eyelids. Overkill if the student has a dark single room.

Study supplies

3. Owala FreeSip, 24 oz, from $23.99. Stainless steel with a built-in straw or wide-mouth opening and a push-button lid. Price varies by color. Fits in a backpack side pocket. A full water bottle is one of the desk-setup basics.

4. Zebra Mildliner Mix, 3-pack, $8.25. Two-color chisel-tip highlighters in warm or cool tones. Cheap, useful, easy to pack. Skip if the student is all-digital.

5. Baron Fig Strategist index cards, $12.00. Thick-stock 3x5 cards in dot grid or to-do format. Hand-written flashcards force retrieval practice. Unnecessary if the student already uses Anki or another spaced-repetition app.

6. Anker Zolo Power Bank (10K, 30W), $29.99. 10,000 mAh with a built-in USB-C cable and 30W output. Useful for library days where outlets are scarce.

Desk snacks that travel

Everything in this section ships without refrigeration and survives a few days in a campus mailroom.

7. Pipsnacks Sea Salt Mini Popcorn, $18.00. Four 4.5 oz bags of Sea Salt mini popcorn (a Truffle version is also $18.00). Pipsnacks lists it as non-GMO and gluten-free. Bulkier than the other items, so drop it in a tight box.

8. Chomps Original Chicken Chomplings, 6 ct, $8.99. Mini chicken meat sticks that pack flat and need no fridge. Quick protein between meals. Not ideal for vegetarian students.

9. SkinnyDipped Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Bites, 4-pack (3.17 oz each), $22.99. Brand states 3 g of sugar per bite, no sugar alcohols or artificial colors or flavors. The priciest snack here; cut it if budget is tight.

Coffee, tea, and a caffeine option

10. Waka Premium Instant Coffee Sample Pack, $9.99. Eight single-serve packets: three medium roast, three dark roast, two decaf. No machine, just hot water. The decaf packets give the student a coffee-flavored option past 8 p.m. without adding to the day's caffeine total.

11. Roon caffeine pouches, from $9.16 per tin (12-tin subscription). Fifteen Cool Mint pouches to a tin, each with 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine and no nicotine. No liquid to carry into a quiet library section. For adults 18+ only. The FDA treats 400 mg a day as an amount not generally tied to negative effects in healthy adults, so the student should count each pouch alongside any coffee or tea. More on caffeine limits.

12. Harney & Sons Decaf Hot Cinnamon Spice, tin of 30 sachets, $16.50. Decaf black tea with cinnamon, orange peel, and cloves. Each sachet brews one 12 oz cup; no sugar or added sweeteners. Good for late-evening study sessions when caffeine is off the table.

Two box sizes, priced out

You don't need all 12 items. Two practical tiers:

Starter box, $52.18: Loop Quiet 2 ($24.95) + Zebra Mildliner Mix 3-pack ($8.25) + Chomps 6 ct ($8.99) + Waka sample pack ($9.99).

Full box, $104.67: The starter box plus Owala FreeSip 24 oz (from $23.99) + Baron Fig Strategist index cards ($12.00) + Harney Decaf Hot Cinnamon Spice ($16.50).

All 11 non-Roon items together: $214.65.

Formula: sum of each item's listed brand-site price, before shipping and tax.

When to mail a finals care package

Mail it at least a week before the first exam. USPS lists Ground Advantage at 2 to 5 business days and Priority Mail at 2 to 3 business days.

School (fall 2026)Exam weekGround Advantage: mail byPriority Mail: mail by
Western Carolina UniversityDec 7 to 11Mon, Nov 30Wed, Dec 2
Ohio Wesleyan (reading days Dec 12-13)Dec 14 to 17Mon, Dec 7Wed, Dec 9
University of KansasDec 14 to 18Mon, Dec 7Wed, Dec 9

These are planning suggestions based on USPS's published service windows, not guaranteed dates. Campus mailrooms add sorting time, especially around Thanksgiving week (Nov 23 to 27), so check the student's housing mail page. If the box is headed home for winter break instead, USPS holiday send-by dates for delivery before Dec 25 are Ground Advantage by Dec 17 and Priority Mail by Dec 18.

What to leave out of a finals care package

Anything perishable or requiring refrigeration. Energy-drink multipacks stacked on top of coffee (if the student wants one, point them to a comparison of energy drinks for studying and let them pick). Anything that needs a microwave if the dorm doesn't have one. And skip caffeine products entirely for a student under 18; Roon, for instance, is labeled for adults 18 and older.

Add a note with a plan, not just snacks

A handwritten card makes the whole box land differently. Skip generic encouragement; write a specific plan: "Use the earplugs for a 90-minute block, break for 15 minutes, then eat a snack." More study-habit ideas and pacing strategies are worth jotting on the card.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you put in a finals care package?

Sleep gear (earplugs, a sleep mask), study supplies (highlighters, index cards, a power bank), shelf-stable snacks (popcorn, meat sticks, chocolate), and a warm drink option (instant coffee, decaf tea). Pick one or two from each category to fit your budget and box size.

How much should a finals care package cost?

A four-item starter box from this list totals $52.18 before shipping. A seven-item full box comes to $104.67. Shipping and tax are extra.

Can you send caffeine in a care package?

Yes, for an adult student; Roon, for example, is for adults 18 and older. The FDA cites 400 mg per day as the amount not generally linked to negative effects in healthy adults. Include a note so the student counts all sources.

When is finals week?

It varies. Fall 2026 examples: Western Carolina Dec 7 to 11, University of Kansas Dec 14 to 18, Ohio Wesleyan Dec 14 to 17. Check the registrar page before setting a ship date.

A Smaller Caffeine Dose for Long Study Days

A 12-hour library day needs caffeine that holds through the afternoon, not a single spike at 9 a.m.

Roon pairs 80 mg caffeine with 60 mg L-theanine and 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine). Methylliberine slows caffeine clearance: in a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12), caffeine's half-life rose from 7.2 to 15 hours with no increase in peak concentration. That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, about 4x and 1.9x a single Roon pouch, so the direction of the mechanism applies, not the exact numbers. A 15-hour half-life is clearance math, not 15 hours of alertness; a pouch tends to carry through roughly six to eight hours of a study day. The tradeoff: keep 8 hours clear between your last pouch and sleep, which during finals means planning backward from your alarm.

If one pouch is not enough, a second one later is fine; just keep the whole day, coffee included, under the FDA's 400 mg figure. Zero nicotine, zero sugar, no drink to carry. Roon is from $9.16 per tin on a 12-tin subscription, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first order. Tuck a tin in the box.
