NZE vs Grinds Energy Pouches: 50 mg or 80 mg Caffeine?

Pick Grinds Energy over NZE Energy if you want more caffeine for less (80 mg vs 50 mg, $0.27 vs $0.37 a pouch on subscription, sold at Walmart and 15,000+ stores); pick NZE Energy if you want a lighter 50 mg dose with L-theanine, Alpha GPC and L-tyrosine and no sucralose (it uses stevia and xylitol). Roon, a third option, pairs 80 mg caffeine with 60 mg L-theanine, Dynamine and TeaCrine, and caps use at 4 pouches a day.

Disclosure: Roon makes a competing caffeine pouch and appears below as a labelled third option. Every NZE and Grinds number here comes from the brands' own pages, checked November 2026.

Source: brand labels and product pages, prices checked Nov 2026. Grinds' FAQ says its white pouches were upgraded to 18 per can, up from 15, so Grinds figures use 18; some older Grinds listings still say about 15.

Choose Grinds Energy If

  • You want 80 mg per pouch, 60% more caffeine than NZE's 50 mg.
  • You want the lowest cost per milligram. $0.34 per 100 mg, less than half NZE's $0.75.
  • You want one can or in-store pickup. $7.95 single can online; $5.97 at Walmart.

Choose NZE Energy If

  • You want 50 mg per pouch, easier to stack or cut back.
  • You want nootropics with published doses. 35 mg each of Alpha GPC, L-theanine and L-tyrosine (per the Costco label).
  • You avoid artificial sweeteners. NZE uses stevia and xylitol; Grinds uses sucralose and acesulfame K.

Where Roon Fits, and Where It Falls Short

Roon matches Grinds at 80 mg caffeine but adds 60 mg L-theanine, Dynamine and TeaCrine. It is the only one of the three that publishes an effect window: 6 to 8 hours. Every ingredient dose is printed, with 0 calories and 0 g sugar.

Where Roon loses: higher price ($0.61 per pouch; $0.76 per 100 mg vs Grinds' $0.34). One flavor. Bought at takeroon.com with no Amazon listing, and no single tin (one-time orders are multi-tin packs, or subscribe). Like Grinds, it uses sucralose.

How We Lined These Up

We read both brands' product pages, store JSON and FAQs on November 7, 2026, plus the NZE label from its Costco listing. Price per pouch = price / pouch count. Per 100 mg = per-pouch price / caffeine mg x 100. We did not lab-test any of these products or run any use test of our own. Roon makes a competing caffeine pouch and this page links to it.

Caffeine: 50 mg vs 80 mg

Grinds Energy delivers 80 mg per pouch; NZE delivers 50 mg. The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. NZE caps use at 8 pouches a day (400 mg), no more than 2 per hour. Grinds does not publish a daily limit; five pouches reach 400 mg. NZE's label says not to use it if you are a child, pregnant or nursing, or sensitive to caffeine, and the same caution is sensible for any caffeine pouch; ask a doctor first if you take medication or have a heart condition.

Neither brand publishes how long the caffeine effect lasts, only how long the flavor holds (NZE: 30 to 60 minutes; Grinds: up to 1 hour).

Price per Pouch and per 100 mg Caffeine

OfferNZE EnergyGrinds Energy (at 18/can)
Single can, one-timeNot available on nzepouches.com$7.95 = $0.44

Subscription5 cans $27.99 (20% off) = $0.3710 cans $49.46 (10% off) = $0.27
Per 100 mg caffeine$0.75$0.34

Grinds wins on cost at less than half NZE's price per 100 mg.

Roon's $0.76 per 100 mg is higher than both, and Roon does not try to win that metric. One pouch is 80 mg, about a small coffee; if you want more, two at once is 160 mg, and the label caps use at 4 pouches a day. Methylliberine (Dynamine) slowed caffeine clearance in a randomized crossover PK study (n=12), extending caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours without raising peak levels, though that study used about four times Roon's methylliberine dose and roughly twice its caffeine dose, so the magnitude may differ. Roon's stated felt window is 6 to 8 hours, roughly $0.08 to $0.10 per hour. Neither NZE nor Grinds publishes a duration for comparison. Finish your last Roon pouch at least 8 hours before you intend to sleep.

Ingredients and Sweeteners

NZE names L-theanine, Alpha GPC and L-tyrosine on its site without milligrams. The Costco listing prints 35 mg each. Sweeteners: stevia and xylitol (xylitol amount not published).

Grinds Energy uses a microcrystalline cellulose base (no coffee grounds) with an energy blend of caffeine, taurine, niacin, glucuronolactone and B vitamins. Only caffeine (80 mg) is dosed. Sweeteners: sucralose and acesulfame potassium. The separate Grinds Coffee Pouches line (coffee grounds, 3 to 100 mg, from $5.95/can) and Focus pouches (no caffeine; 40 mg Alpha GPC and 40 mg L-theanine per pouch, per the Grinds FAQ) are different products not compared here.

Flavors and Where to Buy

NZE Energy: 8 flavors (Coffee, Strawberry Kiwi, Cinnamon, Tropic Mango, Wintergreen, Lemon Cherry, Spearmint, Peppermint) plus Variety, on nzepouches.com. Also listed at Costco and on Amazon; see NZE at Costco and other stores.

Grinds Energy: six flavors whose product pages state 80 mg (Grape, Orange Chill, Sour Apple, Watermelon, White Peach, Wintergreen Energy). The same white-pouch line also lists Arctic Mint, Blue Raspberry, Sour Pouch and Strawberry Kiwi without a caffeine figure, plus caffeine-free ZERØ.Ø in Wintergreen and Piña Colada. Some flavors are tagged Innovation Lab. Singles and packs on getgrinds.com; also at Walmart and 15,000+ stores (see where to buy Grinds Energy).

Where Each One Loses

NZE: Lower caffeine per pouch (50 vs 80 mg). No single can on nzepouches.com; minimum is a 5-pack. Higher price per 100 mg ($0.75 vs $0.34).

Grinds Energy: Some older listings still say about 15 pouches per can instead of 18. Energy blend beyond caffeine is undosed. Two artificial sweeteners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which has more caffeine per pouch, NZE or Grinds?

Grinds Energy at 80 mg per pouch vs NZE Energy at 50 mg. That is 60% more caffeine per Grinds pouch. Neither brand publishes how long the effect lasts.

Are NZE pouches cheaper at Costco?

Costco lists NZE Energy as a 6-count of 15-pouch cans. We could not capture a Costco price on November 7, 2026, so check your warehouse or costco.com before comparing it with NZE's $0.37 subscription price.

Do Grinds Energy pouches contain coffee?

No. Grinds Energy uses a microcrystalline cellulose base. The FAQ confirms no coffee in the Energy line. Their Coffee Pouches line is a separate product.

How many NZE or Grinds pouches can you use in a day?

NZE's label caps use at 8 a day, 2 per hour (400 mg total). Grinds does not publish a daily limit. The FDA cites 400 mg a day for most adults; five Grinds pouches or eight NZE pouches hit that number.

Do NZE and Grinds contain nicotine?

No. Both brands state their pouches are tobacco-free and nicotine-free across all product lines.

One 80 mg Pouch, Built to Last the Afternoon

Neither NZE nor Grinds publishes how long one pouch's energy effect lasts. Roon does: 6 to 8 hours. Each pouch pairs 80 mg caffeine with 60 mg L-theanine, methylliberine (Dynamine) and theacrine (TeaCrine). Methylliberine slowed caffeine clearance in a small human PK study, though that study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine (about 4x and 1.9x Roon's doses), so the direction applies to Roon's formula, not the exact numbers. Keep your last pouch at least 8 hours before bed.

Roon costs more per pouch than either brand here (from $9.16 per tin, as little as $0.61 per pouch on a 12-tin subscription). Zero sugar, sweetened with sucralose, one flavor, and no Amazon listing; order at takeroon.com. First orders carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, once per customer, nothing to send back. If cost per milligram matters most, Grinds or NZE wins. If you want one pouch to cover a full work block, that is what Roon is for.
