Where the 20 to 30 Minute Window Comes From

Three Caveats Every Other Page Omits

Be skeptical of any headline number that comes without these.

1. Thirty-six people. That is a pilot signal, not population-level confidence. The authors themselves call for a larger and more diverse sample.

2. Ninety-two percent women. Thirty-three of 36 were women, mean age 45.8, 86% white. Cortisol regulation differs by sex and age. This measured the response of middle-aged women who chose to sign up, not humans in general.

3. Self-selected nature enthusiasts. People who already enjoy being outside are more likely to sign up and more likely to show a benefit. A 2019 meta-analysis of forest bathing studies found that cortisol was lower in forest groups even before the intervention began, with the authors noting that "anticipated placebo effects can play an important role."

None of this makes the finding wrong. It makes it a starting point, not a prescription.

What Other Duration Studies Found

Other studies tested different durations, outcomes, and populations.

Berman, Jonides, and Kaplan (2008) sent 38 participants on a roughly 50-minute walk through either an arboretum or downtown Ann Arbor.
