Does Twisted Tea Have Caffeine? Every Style and Can Size

Does Twisted Tea Have Caffeine? Every Style and Can Size

Yes. Twisted Tea contains caffeine because it is brewed with real tea leaves. According to Twisted Tea's own FAQ, a 12 oz serving has about 30 mg of caffeine, roughly a third of what you get from an 8 oz cup of coffee and close to a 12 oz can of Coca-Cola (34 mg). The caffeine is naturally occurring, not added. A 24 oz can works out to about 60 mg.

That 30 mg answers the question most people are actually asking: will this keep me up tonight, and does it count toward my daily caffeine? Short answer: probably not, and barely.

How Much Caffeine Is in Twisted Tea?

Twisted Tea publishes a single caffeine figure for its entire product line. From the brand's FAQ page: "a 12 oz. serving of Twisted Tea has about 30mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee has around 100mg." There is no separate number for any individual flavor, for Light, for Half and Half, or for the Extreme line.

Since Twisted Tea sells cans in three sizes, here is the arithmetic from that one published figure.

Can or Bottle SizeEstimated Caffeinemg per fl oz
12 oz (bottle or can)~30 mg~2.5
16 oz (can)~40 mg~2.5
24 oz (can)~60 mg~2.5

These are proportional estimates, not lab-tested per-size values. The brand gives one number, per 12 oz, for the whole line.

Every Twisted Tea Style, ABV, and Package Size

All 15 current styles are listed below, sourced from Twisted Tea's product pages as of September 2026. Every style is labeled "Malt Beverage with Tea and Natural Flavors" (except Light, which adds "and Artificial Sweeteners").

A note on Half & Half: the name refers to half tea, half lemonade. The brand does not publish a lower caffeine figure for it, so there is no basis for halving the 30 mg number. The same goes for Light and the Extreme styles. Twisted Tea simply does not break it out.

Is Twisted Tea Made with Real Tea?

Yes. Twisted Tea's FAQ states the drink is "made with real brewed tea, natural flavors and a malt base made from beer." The malt base means it is brewed similarly to beer, contains gluten (the brand confirms it is not gluten-free), and sits at 5% ABV for most styles (8% for Extreme). The caffeine comes along with the tea leaves, not from an added caffeine ingredient.

Twisted Tea Caffeine vs. Coffee, Cola, and Other Hard Teas

Context matters. Thirty milligrams is a small dose relative to the drinks most people use for actual energy. Here is how it stacks up.

Twisted Tea lands in cola territory. If you are looking for other places caffeine hides in everyday foods, the amount in a hard tea is comparable to what you would find in a slice of tiramisu or a can of Coke Zero.

Aren't Caffeinated Alcoholic Drinks Banned?

Sort of, but not the way Twisted Tea is made. On November 17, 2010, the FDA sent warning letters to four manufacturers (including Phusion Projects, maker of Four Loko) stating that caffeine added directly to their malt alcoholic beverages was an "unsafe food additive." The TTB followed up the next day.

The key distinction: the FDA's action targeted caffeine that was added as an ingredient. Caffeine that arrives naturally as part of brewed tea or coffee was not the subject of those letters. That is why hard teas, coffee liqueurs like Kahlúa, and espresso martinis remain on shelves.

Will Twisted Tea Keep You Awake?

Thirty to 60 mg of caffeine is a small dose. For reference, the FDA cites 400 mg per day as the amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. A 12 oz Twisted Tea accounts for less than 8% of that ceiling, and even a 24 oz can (about 60 mg) stays well under it.

But here is the more important point. The CDC states plainly: "The effects of alcohol on your body do not change when it is used with caffeine." Caffeine can make you feel more alert than you actually are, which is exactly why the combination drew regulatory scrutiny in the first place. The alcohol, not the 30 mg of caffeine, is what disrupts sleep quality. If you want to know how long that caffeine actually lasts in your system, the answer is a few hours for a dose this small, but the alcohol's effects on your sleep will outlast it.

Some quick math on the alcohol side, per the NIAAA definition of a standard drink (0.6 fl oz of pure alcohol):

  • 12 oz Twisted Tea at 5% ABV = 1 standard drink
  • 24 oz Twisted Tea at 5% ABV = 2 standard drinks
  • 24 oz Twisted Tea Extreme at 8% ABV = 3.2 standard drinks (24 x 0.08 / 0.6)

Never drive after drinking. And if you are wondering about next-day brain fog or anxiety after alcohol, caffeine the morning after is a separate question entirely.

Who Should Pay Attention to the Caffeine?

For most adults 21 and over, 30 mg of caffeine from a hard tea is unlikely to matter. A few groups should think about it:

  • Pregnancy. Alcohol is the first and bigger concern. Medical guidelines advise no alcohol during pregnancy. The caffeine question is secondary, but talk to your clinician about both.
  • Caffeine sensitivity or heart conditions. If a doctor has told you to limit caffeine, or if you react strongly to small amounts, count the 30 mg toward your daily total. Talk to your prescriber if you are unsure.
  • Under 21. Twisted Tea is an alcoholic beverage. It is not for you.

If you are interested in skipping the alcohol altogether, non-alcoholic options remove one variable from the equation.

A Little Tea, a Full Drink

Twisted Tea has about 30 mg of caffeine per 12 oz, roughly what you get from a can of cola. The caffeine is natural, from brewed tea leaves, and falls well within what the FDA considers unremarkable for a healthy adult. It is not going to fuel a work session, and it will not offset what the alcohol does to your body. The alcohol is the active ingredient. Count your standard drinks, not your milligrams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Twisted Tea have caffeine?

Yes. Twisted Tea is made with real brewed tea, so it contains naturally occurring caffeine. The brand's FAQ states a 12 oz serving has about 30 mg, less than a third of an 8 oz cup of coffee.

How much caffeine is in a 24 oz Twisted Tea?

About 60 mg, based on the brand's published figure of approximately 30 mg per 12 oz. Twisted Tea does not list a separate caffeine number per can size, so this is proportional arithmetic.

Does Twisted Tea Half and Half have caffeine?

The brand publishes one caffeine figure (about 30 mg per 12 oz) for the entire line and does not give a separate number for Half & Half. The "half" in the name refers to half tea, half lemonade, not a reduced caffeine formula.

Does Twisted Tea Light or Extreme have more caffeine?

Twisted Tea does not publish per-style caffeine data. Light (4% ABV) and Extreme (8% ABV) differ in alcohol content and calories, but the only caffeine figure on record is the line-wide approximately 30 mg per 12 oz.

Is Twisted Tea made with real tea?

Yes. The brand says it is "made with real brewed tea, natural flavors and a malt base made from beer." It contains gluten and is not gluten-free.

Does Hard Mtn Dew have caffeine?

No. Hard Mountain Dew's FAQ states it is "free from all caffeine," despite the regular Mountain Dew soft drink containing caffeine. Hard Mtn Dew is a flavored malt beverage at 5% ABV.

Keep Your Caffeine for the Hours You're Working

The caffeine in a Twisted Tea is incidental. About 30 mg, the same ballpark as a cola, arriving inside an alcoholic drink you are having for reasons that have nothing to do with focus or productivity. That is fine for a Saturday afternoon. It is not a caffeine strategy.

If you want caffeine to actually do something, keep it separate from the alcohol and use it in a counted, labeled dose during working hours. Roon is a zero-nicotine, zero-alcohol, zero-sugar oral pouch built around that idea: 80 mg of caffeine paired with 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). The methylliberine slows caffeine's clearance. In a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (Mondal et al. 2022, n=12), co-administration of methylliberine with caffeine cut caffeine's oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and extended its half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no increase in peak concentration. That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, roughly 4x and 1.9x Roon's doses respectively, so the magnitude of the effect at Roon's lower doses is directionally similar but not identical. The practical result is a felt window of 6 to 8 hours from a single pouch, which is why 80 mg is enough. The trade-off: stop at least 8 hours before bed.

Roon is not meant to be used with alcohol or to push through a night out. It is a daytime tool. Subscriptions start at $9.16 per tin (15 pouches). One-time purchase is $15.00 per tin (four-tin minimum, $60.00 total). Try Roon for your next work block, not your next cookout.
