C4 Smart Energy Review: Cognizin, 200 mg Caffeine, Price
C4 Smart Energy is a 12 oz, zero-sugar energy drink with 200 mg of caffeine from green coffee beans, Cognizin citicoline, and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine. The caffeine dose is printed on the can. The nootropic doses are not. Its one published trial tested the full drink against a placebo, so the focus results cannot be separated from the 200 mg of caffeine. Here is what the label, the science, and the price actually tell you.
Key takeaways:
- 200 mg caffeine per 12 oz can, half the FDA's 400 mg daily reference for most adults.
- Cognizin citicoline and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine are listed but their milligram amounts are not disclosed.
- The brand's n=45 trial (Schwager et al., J Am Nutr Assoc 2024) compared the whole can to a placebo, not to caffeine alone.
- $1.87 per can one-time, $1.69 subscribed, from the brand store.

What Is C4 Smart Energy?
C4 Smart Energy is Nutrabolt's "focus" line inside the broader C4 energy portfolio. Where C4 Performance Energy targets workouts and C4 Ultimate targets high-stimulant users, Smart Energy is marketed for mental performance: the can reads "Mental Focus" and "Plant-based energy."
Keurig Dr Pepper invested $863 million for an approximately 30% stake in Nutrabolt in December 2022, with a long-term distribution agreement that puts C4 cans in grocery, convenience, and club stores nationwide.
| Product | Can size | Caffeine | Brand store 12-pack price |
|---|---|---|---|
| C4 Smart Energy | 12 oz | 200 mg | $22.49 |
| C4 Performance Energy | 16 oz | 200 mg | $27.99 |
| C4 Ultimate Energy | 16 oz | 300 mg | $27.99 |
"Smart" signals nootropics, not more stimulant. Whether the signal matches the substance is the rest of this review.
C4 Smart Energy Ingredients, Line by Line
Caffeine, 200 mg. The brand page says green coffee bean extract. An older retail label (visible on a Target listing, now out of stock) listed "Caffeine (From InnovaTea Green Tea Leaf Extract)" instead. If you have a can in hand, read the panel on that can.
Cognizin citicoline. The brand calls it "clinically studied" and says it "supports mental focus, attention, and recall." No milligram amount is printed anywhere. On the older Target label, Cognizin appears before caffeine in the ingredient list, but ingredient-order positioning alone does not give you a usable dose.
N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NALT). Also unlisted by milligram. The brand describes it as a "soluble form of L-Tyrosine that supports noradrenaline and dopamine."
Other nutrients. Potassium, niacin, vitamin B12. Sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium. Zero sugar, zero calories on the older label.
Does C4 Smart Energy Work? What the Study Actually Tested
The brand claims the drink is "clinically studied to elevate focus, concentration, recall, mental multi-tasking, and gaming performance." That claim rests on one published trial.
Schwager et al. (2024) enrolled 45 healthy young adult video gamers in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover. The drink improved cognitive flexibility (d=0.63), executive function (d=0.63), sustained attention (d=0.44), working memory (d=0.35), and Tetris score (d=0.30, p=0.049). Mood improved on vigor and fatigue. Blood pressure rose slightly; no effect on corrected QT interval.
The limitation is straightforward. The placebo contained no caffeine, so the comparison was the full can (200 mg caffeine plus the nootropics) versus nothing. There was no caffeine-only arm. You cannot say whether Cognizin or NALT contributed anything beyond what 200 mg of caffeine would have done alone.
A follow-up trial at the University of Iowa (NCT06890962, n=34, completed December 2023) compared the standard can against a reduced-citicoline version, a version with less citicoline and less caffeine, and a placebo. No results have been posted. Until they are, the dose question stays open.
Cognizin and N-Acetyl Tyrosine: The Evidence Behind the Names
Cognizin citicoline is a branded CDP-choline from Kyowa Hakko. The study the ingredient maker most often cites gave 60 healthy women aged 40 to 60 either 250 mg or 500 mg daily for 28 days and found fewer errors on a continuous attention test. Two problems: (1) the can does not state whether it contains 250 mg, 500 mg, or some other amount, and (2) that trial measured daily supplementation, not a single dose.
N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is a more soluble form of L-tyrosine. A 2015 review by Jongkees et al. (J Psychiatr Res) found tyrosine appears to help cognitive performance mainly in short-term stressful situations, with mixed results overall. The review covers tyrosine broadly, not the N-acetyl form, and we still do not know the dose in the can.
Without disclosed doses, you are trusting the brand's formulation judgment. That is not "clinically studied" in the way most people would read that phrase.
Is C4 Smart Energy Good for You?
Older labels list 0 calories (PricePlow reports 10 on the refreshed label), 0 g sugar and 200 mg caffeine. That caffeine dose is half the FDA's 400 mg daily reference for most healthy adults, meaning two cans per day would hit the ceiling. The label caution: "Do not consume this product if you are pregnant or nursing. Not intended for children."
The brand store also markets C4 Smart Energy for metabolism and fat loss (with a diet-and-exercise footnote). That is the brand's claim, not something this review evaluates.
C4 Smart Energy Price Per Can
From the C4 Energy brand store, checked October 2026:

Seven flavors: Peach Mango, Cherry Berry Lime, Watermelon Burst, Strawberry Guava, Tropical Passionfruit, plus Blue Raspberry and Black Cherry (both "Digital Exclusive"). At $1.87 per can, you get about 107 mg of caffeine per dollar. Amazon sometimes shows deal prices; compare against the brand store before you buy.
Who C4 Smart Energy Fits, and Who It Does Not
| Product | Best for | Caffeine | Format | Price per serving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C4 Smart Energy | A full 200 mg dose with named nootropics at a low per-can price | 200 mg | 12 oz can | $1.87 one-time |
| C4 Performance Energy | A larger 16 oz pre-workout-style can | 200 mg | 16 oz can | $2.33 one-time |
| Celsius | 200 mg with a fully printed vitamin panel | 200 mg | 12 oz can | $1.97 (Amazon 12-pack) |
| Roon | A smaller 80 mg dose with 60 mg L-theanine, every dose printed, no drink | 80 mg | Oral pouch | From $0.61 subscribed |
C4 Smart Energy wins on price per can and caffeine per dollar. It loses on dose transparency. If you prefer a lower caffeine dose or want to skip the drink format, that is a different product category. For a broader look, see other nootropic energy drinks compared.
The Verdict on C4 Smart Energy
C4 Smart Energy is a fairly priced, zero-sugar, 200 mg caffeine can. The nootropic layer is real in the sense that Cognizin and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine are listed ingredients with published research behind them. It is unproven in the sense that the doses are not disclosed, and the drink's own trial cannot isolate the nootropics from the caffeine.
Buy it for the caffeine and the taste. Treat the "smart" part as directionally interesting but unverified at whatever dose is in the can.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much caffeine is in C4 Smart Energy?
Each 12 oz can contains 200 mg of caffeine from green coffee bean extract, roughly two 8 oz cups of brewed coffee and half the FDA's 400 mg daily reference. See which energy drink has the most caffeine for context.
How much Cognizin is in C4 Smart Energy?
The brand does not disclose the Cognizin dose on the can or the product page. The key ingredient-maker study used 250 mg or 500 mg daily for 28 days. Without a printed dose, you cannot verify whether C4 Smart Energy matches either amount.
Is C4 Smart Energy better than C4 Performance Energy?
Same caffeine (200 mg), different supporting ingredients. Smart Energy adds Cognizin and NALT for focus. Performance Energy comes in a larger 16 oz can and is positioned for workouts and all-day energy. Neither is objectively better; it depends on whether you want a pre-workout vs energy drink.
Is C4 Smart Energy a pre-workout?
Not technically. The brand markets it for focus and mental energy rather than physical performance. Its ingredient list contains no beta-alanine, creatine or other classic pre-workout compounds.
Can you drink two C4 Smart Energy cans a day?
Two cans equal 400 mg of caffeine, matching the FDA's daily reference for most healthy adults. That leaves zero headroom for coffee, tea, or any other caffeine source. One can is a more practical ceiling.
Does C4 Smart Energy have sugar or artificial sweeteners?
Zero sugar. It is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium, both artificial sweeteners.
Every Dose on the Label, and a Longer Window
The core tension in this review is transparency. C4 Smart Energy prints its caffeine but keeps its nootropic doses off the label. Its trial shows the whole can works, but cannot tell you what the nootropics add beyond caffeine alone.
Roon takes a different approach. Every dose is printed: 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). The format is a zero-nicotine oral pouch, not a drink. 80 mg is less than half a C4 Smart Energy can, which is deliberate. Methylliberine slows caffeine's clearance: in a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12), co-administration cut caffeine's oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and extended its half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no increase in peak concentration. That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, roughly 4x Roon's methylliberine and 1.9x its caffeine, so the direction applies but the exact numbers do not. Roon's felt window is 6 to 8 hours, onset in 5 to 10 minutes. Stop at least 8 hours before bed.
Zero sugar, contains sucralose. Designed to minimize jitters and crash. From $9.16 per tin on a 12-tin subscription ($0.61 per pouch), or $15.00 per tin one-time. It will not replace a can if you want something to sip. But if what L-theanine adds to caffeine and full dose disclosure matter more to you than volume, try Roon.
