Does Dr Pepper Have Caffeine? Every Version Compared

Yes. A 12 fl oz can of Dr Pepper has approximately 41 mg of caffeine, according to Keurig Dr Pepper's product facts site (checked September 19, 2026). Diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Zero Sugar list the same 41 mg. A 20 fl oz bottle has about 68 mg. That works out to roughly 3.4 mg per fl oz, a bit more than Coca-Cola and less than half the caffeine in an 8 oz coffee.

The number itself is small. What catches people off guard is the bottle size: grab a 20 oz from a gas station cooler and you are getting 68 mg, not 41.

How Much Caffeine Is in Dr Pepper? Every Size

All figures come from Keurig Dr Pepper's product facts pages, which word every number as "approx." KDP also has a second 12 fl oz record listing approx. 43 mg (likely a different pack configuration), which is why some sites print 42. The table below uses the primary listing.

SizeCaffeine (approx.)mg per fl oz
7.5 fl oz mini can26 mg3.5
12 fl oz can41 mg3.4
16 fl oz bottle55 mg3.4
16.9 fl oz bottle58 mg3.4
20 fl oz bottle68 mg3.4
2-liter bottle (67.6 fl oz total)41 mg per 12 fl oz serving; ~231 mg in the whole bottle*3.4

Whole-bottle figure computed from the per-serving concentration. The label only shows 41 mg because it uses a 12 fl oz serving size.

The per-ounce rate is nearly flat across every size. So the only variable is volume. A mini can is 26 mg. A 20 oz bottle is 68. Pick the size, multiply by 3.4, and you have the number.

Does Diet Dr Pepper Have Caffeine? Does Dr Pepper Zero?

These are the two most common follow-up questions, and the answer to both is yes, with the same caffeine as regular.

Diet Dr Pepper caffeine

Diet Dr Pepper lists approx. 41 mg per 12 fl oz, 55 mg per 16 fl oz, and 68 mg per 20 fl oz. Identical to regular Dr Pepper at every size. The "diet" label means zero sugar and zero calories, not less caffeine.

Dr Pepper Zero Sugar caffeine

Dr Pepper Zero Sugar also lists approx. 41 mg per 12 fl oz and 68 mg per 20 fl oz. Same story. Switching to a zero-sugar version does not change the caffeine content.

Caffeine in Every Dr Pepper Flavor

Below is every current variant with figures pulled from kdpproductfacts.com on September 19, 2026. Where a size was not listed on KDP's site, the cell is left blank.

The short version: almost every Dr Pepper flavor clusters around 41 mg per 12 fl oz. Cherry and Vanilla Float run a hair lower at 40. The frozen version is a clear outlier at 23 mg.

Is There a Caffeine Free Dr Pepper?

Yes, as a product name. Dr Pepper still lists a Caffeine Free version on drpepper.com, and Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper also has a brand page. But neither product appeared on Keurig Dr Pepper's product facts site as of September 19, 2026 (both pages returned "Invalid Page"), and neither is included in KDP's current list of 24 Dr Pepper products.

That does not necessarily mean they are gone for good. Regional availability shifts. If you want a caffeine-free Dr Pepper, check your local shelf for the words "Caffeine Free" printed on the label. If the label does not say it, the can has caffeine.

Dr Pepper has about 20% more caffeine than Coca-Cola (41 vs 34 mg per 12 oz) but less than Diet Coke (46 mg). It is within the FDA's typical 30-40 mg soft-drink range for a 12 oz can. For more detail, see Coke Zero's caffeine, Red Bull's caffeine by can size, caffeine in Monster, or convert caffeine mg into cups of coffee.

Why Does Dr Pepper Have Caffeine?

It is an added ingredient. The KDP product facts label lists "caffeine" as the last item in the ingredient list, after carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural and artificial flavors, and sodium benzoate. Unlike coffee or tea, where caffeine occurs naturally in the bean or leaf, soda caffeine is put there on purpose during manufacturing.

How Many Dr Peppers Is Too Many?

For most healthy adults, the FDA places the general guideline at 400 mg per day. At 41 mg per 12 oz can, that is nearly ten cans (9.8, to be exact) before you hit the caffeine ceiling. With 20 oz bottles, it is about six (5.9).

But caffeine is not the real limiter. Sugar is. A single 12 fl oz Dr Pepper has 39 g of added sugar, which is 78% of the Daily Value on KDP's nutrition panel. Two cans would be 156% DV. Three cans, 234%. The math gets uncomfortable fast.

For pregnant women, ACOG recommends staying under 200 mg of caffeine per day, which is just under five 12 oz cans or just under three 20 oz bottles. Talk to your clinician about where your specific limit sits. For children and adolescents, EFSA has proposed 3 mg per kilogram of body weight per day as a safe threshold; some people, regardless of age, are simply more sensitive to caffeine than others. If that sounds familiar, read about why small doses hit some people hard.

Will a Dr Pepper Keep You Up at Night?

Probably not, if it is a single 12 oz can and you are drinking it before late afternoon. 41 mg is a small dose. The mean half-life of caffeine is about 5 hours, though it can range from 1.5 to 9.5 hours depending on your genetics and metabolism. A 12 oz can at 3 pm would leave roughly 20 mg in your system by 8 pm for the average person.

A 20 oz bottle is different. At 68 mg, you are closer to a cup of tea, and EFSA notes that a single dose of 100 mg near bedtime may increase sleep latency and shorten total sleep time in some adults. A 20 oz Dr Pepper with dinner sits below that threshold, but not by much, especially if you metabolize caffeine slowly. For a deeper look at timing, see how long caffeine stays in your system and the latest time for caffeine before bed.

The Caffeine Picture, in One Sentence

Dr Pepper is a low-caffeine drink: 41 mg per 12 oz, flat across almost every flavor, with bottle size as the only real variable. Count it toward your daily total, but don't overcount it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dr Pepper have more caffeine than Coke?

Yes, slightly. A 12 fl oz Dr Pepper has about 41 mg versus Coca-Cola's 34 mg. Diet Coke flips the script at 46 mg, making it higher than both. The difference between Dr Pepper and regular Coke is 7 mg, roughly the amount in a few sips of coffee.

Does Dr Pepper Cream Soda have caffeine?

Yes. Dr Pepper and Cream Soda has approx. 41 mg per 12 fl oz and 68 mg per 20 fl oz. The zero-sugar version has the same caffeine.

Does Dr Pepper Zero Sugar have caffeine?

Yes. Dr Pepper Zero Sugar lists approx. 41 mg per 12 fl oz. "Zero sugar" refers to sugar content, not caffeine.

How much caffeine is in a 20 oz Dr Pepper?

About 68 mg, per Keurig Dr Pepper's product facts. That is roughly two-thirds the caffeine in a standard 8 oz cup of brewed coffee (~95 mg per USDA).

Does fountain Dr Pepper have the same caffeine?

The KDP product facts listing for fountain Dr Pepper shows 41 mg per 12 fl oz of drink, same as the can. But remember: ice takes up space. A 20 oz cup full of ice holds well under 20 oz of actual soda, so your real caffeine intake is lower than you might expect from the cup size.

Is Dr Pepper a cola?

Dr Pepper is marketed as its own flavor category, not as a cola. The ingredient list includes caramel color and phosphoric acid (common in colas), but Keurig Dr Pepper sells it as a standalone brand with a proprietary flavor profile.

When 41 mg of Soda Caffeine Is Not Doing the Job

If you have read this far, you already know the math: a 12 oz Dr Pepper delivers 41 mg of caffeine. Anyone reaching for a second or third can to stay sharp in the afternoon is stacking 78 to 117 g of added sugar (or a lot of artificial sweetener) just to reach what a small cup of coffee provides. You are not paying for caffeine at that point. You are paying for liquid.

Roon is an 80 mg caffeine pouch, roughly two cans' worth in a single sublingual dose, with 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). Zero sugar (the formula contains sucralose), zero calories, nothing to drink. One pouch, one pocket, no bottle.

The duration difference matters. A can of Dr Pepper's caffeine follows a roughly 5-hour half-life curve and fades accordingly. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover PK study (n=12), methylliberine co-administered with caffeine cut caffeine's oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and extended its half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no increase in peak concentration (study). That study used 100 mg methylliberine + 150 mg caffeine, roughly 4x the methylliberine and 1.9x the caffeine in a Roon pouch, so Roon's felt window of 6 to 8 hours is directionally the same mechanism at a lower dose, not a direct replication of those numbers. The trade-off: a longer half-life means you should stop at least 8 hours before bed.

Roon is not Dr Pepper. It does not taste like Dr Pepper, and if you love the soda, keep the soda. But if you are reaching for the can because you want the lift, not the drink, one pouch from $9.16 per tin on subscription ($0.61/pouch) is a cleaner way to get there.
