How to Use Ultra Pouches: Focus, Energy and Sleep Directions
Want to know how to use Ultra pouches? Put one between your lip and gum (the upper lip is the usual spot; Ultra does not specify), leave it in place, and swallow your saliva normally. Do not chew or swallow the pouch. Ultra sells three lines (Focus, Energy, Sleep), each with different hold times, daily limits and timing rules. The table below covers all three, checked against Ultra's pages on October 7, 2026. For ingredients and flavors, see our Ultra pouches review.
Key Takeaways
- Ultra Focus: hold 30 to 60 minutes, up to 4 per day.
- Ultra Energy: hold up to 30 minutes, no more than 2 per day (360 mg caffeine, close to the FDA's 400 mg daily figure).
- Ultra Sleep: "2-pouch method" at night only; remove the pouch before you fall asleep.
- Never chew, suck hard on, or swallow any Ultra pouch.

How to Use Ultra Pouches, Step by Step
These steps apply to all three lines. For general pouch technique beyond Ultra, see how to use caffeine pouches in general.
-
Pick the right pouch for the time of day. Focus and Energy are daytime products. Sleep is nighttime only, never before driving.
-
Place one pouch between your upper lip and gum. Ultra says "let it find a comfortable spot." Ultra does not name a lip; upper-lip placement is common oral-pouch practice because the pouch stays put.
-
Expect a tingle. Ultra says it fades within a few minutes and means the ingredients are activating.
-
Swallow your saliva normally. You do not need to spit. Ultra's Energy page says to "swallow your saliva to release the caffeine + nootropics."
-
Do not chew, suck hard on, or swallow the pouch. It does not dissolve.
-
Remove at the time limit. Focus: 30 to 60 minutes. Energy: up to 30 minutes. Sleep: before you fall asleep.
-
Discard in the can's top discard tray or the trash.
One note: Ultra's FAQ says "1 to 2 pouches" for Focus, while the product page describes placing one. One at a time is the cautious reading if you are new to pouches.
How Long Do You Keep an Ultra Pouch In?
Ultra Focus: 30 to 60 minutes. Ultra says this window is "for maximal absorption." Effects last 1 to 2 hours per Ultra.
Ultra Energy: up to 30 minutes. Shorter hold, higher caffeine. Ultra's timeline shows performance peaking at 30 minutes, sustaining 1 to 2 hours.
Ultra Sleep: remove before you fall asleep. The pouch does not dissolve, and leaving it in overnight is a choking concern.
How Many Ultra Pouches Can You Use a Day?
Focus: up to 4. Ultra recommends 3 to 4 per day and says not to exceed 4. Ultra's Amazon panel lists 100 mg paraxanthine per pouch (takeultra.com does not print the dose), so four pouches would be about 400 mg.
Energy: no more than 2. Ultra cites FDA guidelines. Two pouches equal 360 mg of caffeine, leaving only 40 mg before the FDA's 400 mg daily figure. Any coffee, tea, or soda the same day tightens the math fast.
Sleep: 2 per night, using the 2-pouch method.
Focus plus Energy on the same day? Ultra gives no guidance on combining them, and the FDA's 400 mg figure is written for caffeine, not paraxanthine. The cautious approach: one line per day, or ask a clinician.
When to Use Each Ultra Pouch, and When to Stop Before Bed
Focus contains no caffeine, but paraxanthine is a stimulant. Ultra's FAQ says not to take Focus pouches within 4 to 6 hours of bedtime. Plan accordingly.
Energy is where timing matters most, and Ultra gives no bedtime cutoff. A 2013 study by Drake et al. (randomized, double-blind, crossover, n = 12) found 400 mg of caffeine taken 6 hours before bed still cut objectively measured sleep by more than an hour. That dose exceeds two Energy pouches, so the finding is directional, not a precise prediction for 180 mg. The FDA notes people eliminate caffeine at very different speeds. Treat an Energy pouch like a large coffee: morning or early afternoon, and use the caffeine half-life calculator to find your cutoff. Same logic for any caffeine pouch, Roon included (stop at least 8 hours before bed).
Sleep is only for nighttime. First pouch 1 to 2 hours before bed, second pouch 10 to 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep. Never use Sleep before driving.
Common Mistakes with Ultra Pouches
- Stacking two Energy pouches at once. That is 360 mg of caffeine in one sitting, nearly the FDA's full daily figure.
- Using Energy late in the day. Ultra's own marketing suggests a "late night kick." The sleep research says otherwise.
- Mixing Focus and Energy without counting. Ultra gives no combined-use guidance. Track your stimulant intake across both.
- Chewing or swallowing the pouch. It does not dissolve and is not designed to be eaten.
- Leaving a Sleep pouch in while falling asleep. Ultra says to remove and discard the pouch before sleep.
- Confusing Ultra with ZYN Ultra. ZYN Ultra is a nicotine pouch (9 mg and 11 mg nicotine), a completely different product. See Ultra pouches vs ZYN and ZYN Ultra.
- Giving them to anyone under 18. Ultra lists Energy for "Adults (18+)."
- For side effect questions, see Ultra pouches side effects.
Who Should Check with a Doctor First
Ultra's FAQ recommends consulting a doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medications, or have an existing health condition. The FDA adds that people who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should talk to a health care provider about caffeine.
Using Ultra Pouches Well: The Short Version
One pouch, right product for the hour, Ultra's recommended hold time, the daily cap, and stimulants off the evening schedule. The table at the top of this page is the reference sheet. Bookmark it, follow the limits, and adjust for your caffeine sensitivity. If you are interested in using Ultra pouches while fasting, calorie and sweetener details are there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you swallow Ultra pouches?
No. You swallow your saliva while the pouch is in, but you remove and discard the pouch itself after the recommended hold time. It does not dissolve. Ultra's Sleep directions say to remove the pouch before falling asleep.
Upper lip or lower lip?
Ultra does not specify. Upper lip placement against the gum is common practice for oral pouches because the pouch tends to stay put. Lower lip works too.
Can you use two Ultra pouches at once?
Ultra's FAQ mentions "1 to 2 pouches" for Focus. For Energy, one pouch is a full serving, and two at once deliver 360 mg of caffeine. Start with one if you are new to pouches.
How long do Ultra pouches last?
Ultra says both Focus and Energy effects last 1 to 2 hours. That explains why the daily limits allow multiple doses. Sleep duration depends on your sleep hygiene; the pouch itself is removed before you fall asleep.
Can you use Ultra Focus and Ultra Energy on the same day?
Ultra gives no guidance on this. Focus uses paraxanthine, not caffeine, and the FDA's 400 mg figure is written for caffeine, not paraxanthine. Without combined-use data, the cautious move is one line per day or a clinician's input.
Are Ultra pouches nicotine free?
Yes. All three lines are nicotine-free and tobacco-free per Ultra. Do not confuse them with ZYN Ultra, which is a nicotine pouch.
If You Are Re-Dosing Every Two Hours
Follow Ultra's directions to the letter and a pattern emerges. Focus lasts 1 to 2 hours, capped at 4 a day. Energy peaks at 30 minutes and sustains for 1 to 2 hours, capped at 2. A full workday means timing the next pouch every couple of hours.
Roon was built around a different problem: making one pouch last a working morning. Each pouch combines 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). Methylliberine slows caffeine's clearance. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover PK study (n = 12), co-administration of methylliberine with caffeine cut oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no increase in peak concentration (study). That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, roughly 4x and 1.9x Roon's doses, so the mechanism is directional, not a measured Roon result. The felt window is 6 to 8 hours, not 15. A longer half-life also means you should stop at least 8 hours before bed.
Roon is not an Ultra replacement for every use case. No paraxanthine, no melatonin. One format, one flavor (Cool Mint, zero nicotine, zero sugar), designed for sustained daytime focus. From $9.16 per tin on a 12-tin subscription ($0.61 per pouch), or $15.00 per tin one-time. If your Ultra routine has you watching the clock, try a pouch you only think about once.
