Ultra Sleep Pouches Review: What 1 mg of Melatonin Does

Ultra Sleep is a nicotine-free, caffeine-free oral pouch with 1 mg of melatonin, 50 mg of L-theanine, and small amounts of magnesium, lemon balm, chamomile, and passionflower. It comes in Honey Lemon, 15 pouches per can, at $16 per can one-time. Of the six ingredients, melatonin has the strongest evidence, and even that effect is modest: about 7 minutes faster sleep onset across 19 controlled trials.

This review reads the Supplement Facts panel and checks the study Ultra cites. (For Ultra's full product line, see our full Ultra pouches review.)

Key Takeaways

  • Ultra Sleep delivers 1 mg melatonin, a defensible low dose, in an oral pouch format that has no published pharmacokinetic data.
  • The five supporting ingredients (L-theanine, magnesium, lemon balm, chamomile, passionflower) are present at fractions of the doses used in sleep research.
  • Ultra's "93% improved sleep score" number comes from an unblinded 100-person customer survey, not a clinical trial.
  • At $16 per can ($1.07 per pouch), pricing is in line with other functional pouches.

A note on the magnesium. Ultra's FAQ lists "Magnesium Gluconate (30 mg)." The Supplement Facts panel says 1.8 mg elemental magnesium, under 1% of the Daily Value. Both numbers are accurate: 30 mg is the total salt weight, but the magnesium ion is only about 5.9% of magnesium gluconate by weight. If you are comparing magnesium vs melatonin for sleep, 1.8 mg is not the dose that moves the needle.

Ultra calls these "six research-backed botanicals and adaptogens." Three of the six are plant extracts. Melatonin is a hormone, L-theanine an amino acid, magnesium a mineral.

Other ingredients include xylitol and Reb M (steviol glycoside) as sweeteners, natural flavors, microcrystalline cellulose, salt, and potassium sorbate. More on the L-theanine pairing in taking L-theanine and melatonin together, and on chamomile's flavonoid apigenin in how chamomile's apigenin works.

Does 1 mg of Melatonin Work?

The short answer: yes, but set your expectations in minutes, not hours.

A 2013 meta-analysis (Ferracioli-Oda et al., PLoS ONE) pooled 19 trials with 1,683 subjects. Melatonin reduced sleep onset latency by 7.06 minutes, increased total sleep time by 8.25 minutes, and modestly improved sleep quality. Effects did not fade with continued use.

On dose: a 2001 study by Zhdanova et al. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab) tested 0.1, 0.3, and 3.0 mg in 30 older adults. Just 0.3 mg restored sleep efficiency in insomniacs. The 3.0 mg dose kept plasma melatonin elevated into daylight and caused mild hypothermia.

The AASM's 2017 clinical guideline (Sateia et al., J Clin Sleep Med) recommends clinicians not use melatonin for chronic insomnia in adults (classified "weak," meaning uncertain evidence, not proven harm).

Bottom line: low-dose melatonin is a legitimate choice for sleep-onset timing. Expect single-digit minutes of improvement, not a knockout.

What the Study Ultra Cites Actually Found

Ultra's product page states that "a 2024 dose-response analysis found that melatonin's sleep benefits peak around 1-4 mg." The paper is Cruz-Sanabria et al., J Pineal Res 2024: 26 double-blind RCTs, 1,689 observations. It found benefit peaks at about 4 mg/day, and that dosing ~3 hours before bedtime worked better than the common 2 mg at 30 minutes before.

Ultra's framing ("peak around 1-4 mg") is not wrong, but the curve peaks at the top of that range. Ultra Sleep contains 1 mg, and its directions say 10 to 30 minutes before bed, the timing the paper found less effective. No trial has tested melatonin via an oral pouch, so whether the format changes absorption is unknown. On published data alone, 1 mg taken 10 to 30 minutes before bed sits at the modest end.

Is the "5 to 10 Minute" Onset Claim Real?

Ultra says users feel "calm mood, heavy eyelids" in as little as 5 to 10 minutes. There is no published pharmacokinetic data for this specific pouch format, so that claim rests on user reports, not a measured absorption curve.

The NCCIH describes melatonin's primary role as a circadian timing signal, not a sedative. It tells your body the time of day, not to shut down. Some people do feel drowsy shortly after, but the experience varies from person to person.

How to Use Ultra Sleep Pouches

Ultra's directions: place one pouch in your mouth 10 to 30 minutes before bedtime. Swallow your saliva. The pouch does not dissolve; remove and discard it before falling asleep.

Ultra also describes a "2-pouch method": take a first pouch 1 to 2 hours before bed, then a second pouch 10 to 30 minutes before. That means 2 mg melatonin and 100 mg L-theanine per night.

Safety notes to know:

  • Do not fall asleep with a pouch in your mouth. Ultra says this explicitly.
  • The NCCIH flags caution for people with epilepsy, those on blood thinners, anyone taking prescription medication, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The NCCIH also notes that 2015 AASM guidelines recommend against melatonin for people with dementia.
  • Keep melatonin pouches away from children. The NCCIH notes that melatonin ingestion reports to poison control centers have risen sharply among young children.

Disclosure: Roon is our product.

Neither Ultra Energy nor Roon is universally better. What matters for sleep is when you stop. A 2013 Drake et al. study found 400 mg of caffeine 6 hours before bed still cut total sleep by about an hour. More in what caffeine does to deep sleep and our Ultra Energy pouches review.

Is Ultra Sleep Worth It?

Ultra Sleep is a sensible low-dose melatonin product in a novel format. The 1 mg dose sits within the range supported by research, and the pouch is sugar-free, nicotine-free, and caffeine-free.

The supporting cast is thin. L-theanine at 50 mg is one-quarter of the 200 mg/day used in the trial (Hidese et al., Nutrients 2019) that found sleep-quality improvements. Elemental magnesium at 1.8 mg is under 1% of the Daily Value. The botanical extracts (10 to 12 mg each) are small amounts with no sleep data at these doses. They round out the label; the research case at these levels is weak.

The headline numbers, "93% of users improved their overall sleep score" and "14% more time spent in REM and deep sleep," come from a consumer perception survey of 100 customers who used Ultra Sleep for 7+ days. The PR release cites 90%. These are satisfaction data from an unblinded sample, not controlled trial results. Treat them accordingly.

One category concern: a 2023 JAMA analysis of 25 US melatonin gummies found 22 inaccurately labeled (74% to 347% of label claims). No independent testing of Ultra Sleep exists, so this is context, not an accusation.

A Low-Dose Melatonin Product in a New Shape

Low-dose melatonin is a reasonable sleep-onset tool backed by decades of research. The effect size is modest; expect minutes, not hours. Supporting ingredients in products like these are often present at token doses that look better on a label than in a dose-response curve. Read the Supplement Facts panel, not the marketing copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much melatonin is in Ultra Sleep pouches?

Each pouch contains 1 mg. The 2-pouch method (one pouch 1 to 2 hours before bed, one 10 to 30 minutes before) totals 2 mg per night. A 2024 dose-response meta-analysis found benefit peaking around 4 mg/day.

Do Ultra Sleep pouches have caffeine or nicotine?

No. Ultra Sleep is nicotine-free and caffeine-free. Active ingredients: melatonin, L-theanine, magnesium gluconate, lemon balm extract, chamomile extract, passionflower extract, plus trace vitamin C and vitamin E.

Can you use Ultra Sleep every night?

Ultra says yes, it is "designed for nightly use." Short-term melatonin appears safe for most adults per the NCCIH, but long-term safety data is limited. If you have epilepsy, take blood thinners or prescription medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a clinician first.

Can you sleep with an Ultra Sleep pouch in?

No. Ultra explicitly says to remove and discard the pouch before falling asleep. It does not dissolve. Sleeping with any oral pouch in your mouth is a choking hazard.

How many pouches per can and how much do they cost?

Each can has 15 pouches. One-time pricing starts at $48 for 3 cans ($16.00/can, $1.07/pouch). Subscriptions go up to 35% off ($10.40/can). Prices verified Oct 7, 2026.

Can you use Ultra Sleep after Ultra Energy or a caffeine pouch?

Yes, but timing matters. Caffeine taken 6 hours before bed can still cut total sleep by about an hour. Ultra recommends not using Focus pouches within 4 to 6 hours of bedtime. A melatonin pouch will not override residual caffeine.

The Daytime Half of a Good Night

Ultra's own 2-pouch FAQ tip is telling: they call the method "especially effective if you've had caffeine or stimulants that day." What you took 8 to 12 hours earlier can still be in your system at bedtime.

If you use a caffeine pouch during the day, the question is how long it lasts and when you stop. Roon is a daytime caffeine pouch built for duration: 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). In a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12), methylliberine co-administered with caffeine slowed caffeine's oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and extended its half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no increase in peak concentration (study). That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine (roughly 4x and 1.9x a Roon pouch), so it did not test Roon: the mechanism is directionally the same, but the size of the effect at Roon's dose may differ. Felt window: 6 to 8 hours.

The tradeoff: a longer half-life means you stop earlier. Roon's guidance is to take your last pouch at least 8 hours before bed. No sleep pouch compensates for caffeine still in your blood. Roon is not a sleep product. It is the daytime half of respecting your sleep. Each tin holds 15 pouches, with zero nicotine, zero sugar, no crash, no jitters. From $9.16 per tin on subscription or $15.00 one-time, if you want a daytime pouch with a clear stop time.
