What Is Snus? How Swedish Snus Differs From Dip and Zyn

Snus is a moist, ground tobacco product from Sweden, pasteurized rather than fermented, and tucked under the upper lip in loose form or in small pouches. It contains nicotine and tobacco. The EU bans snus sales in every member state except Sweden. In the United States, eight General snus products carry an FDA-authorized modified-risk claim relative to cigarettes, with orders expiring November 7, 2032.

What Snus Is Made Of

The core recipe is simple. Swedish Match lists the main ingredients as ground tobacco, water, salt (ordinary cooking salt), and sodium carbonate, plus flavorings and moisture-retaining agents. After blending, the mixture is heated in a computer-controlled pasteurization step. That heat treatment separates snus from American moist snuff, which is fermented, not pasteurized.

Swedish snus falls under the Swedish Food Act, meaning only food-approved additives are permitted. Swedish Match's own GOTHIATEK standard covers production "from seed to end product" and excludes genetically modified tobacco.

Loose, Original Portion and White Portion

Snus comes in three main forms:

  • Loose: ground tobacco packed into a can. The user pinches off a portion and shapes it by hand before placing it under the lip.
  • Original portion: pre-measured tobacco in a cellulose fiber pouch.
  • White portion: Swedish Match describes this as "a gently dryer pouch product with a longer-lasting taste," though the total moisture content matches original portions.

One term to flag: "white snus" in Sweden now often refers to tobacco-free nicotine pouches, not traditional snus. A 2026 paper in the Journal of Internal Medicine notes that nicotine pouches are "commonly referred to as 'white snus' in Sweden." Those products contain no tobacco leaf. The overlap in naming causes real confusion, so always check the label for the word tobacco.

How Is Snus Used?

Swedish snus goes under the upper lip, against the gum. American moist snuff (dip), by contrast, is usually placed under the lower lip. The FDA describes smokeless tobacco placement as "between the gum and the cheek or lip" and notes the product is not heated or burned.

Whatever the placement, the FDA is clear about amount: "There is no safe level of smokeless tobacco use."

Is Snus Legal in the US and Europe?

United States: snus is legal for adults 21 and older under Tobacco 21, the federal minimum-age law effective December 20, 2019. Swedish Match received PMTA authorization for General snus in 2015 and was granted modified-risk tobacco product (MRTP) orders on October 22, 2019. Those orders were renewed November 7, 2024, and expire November 7, 2032. The authorized claim: "Using General Snus instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis." The claim compares snus to cigarettes only, not to abstinence.

European Union: Article 17 of Directive 2014/40/EU states that "Member States shall prohibit the placing on the market of tobacco for oral use," with an exception for Sweden under its accession treaty. Article 2(8) defines "tobacco for oral use" as products "made wholly or partly of tobacco, in powder or in particulate form." Read plainly, tobacco-free nicotine pouches are not "made wholly or partly of tobacco," so they fall outside that definition. That is a reading of the text, not a legal ruling, and national rules on pouches vary.

What the Swedish Studies Show About Snus and Health

Large Swedish cohort studies, all in men, form the main evidence base. The table below summarizes key findings.

Outcome (Swedish men, pooled cohorts)Snus users vs never usersSource
Oral cancerNo association: HR 0.90 (95% CI 0.74 to 1.09), 418,369 menAraghi 2021
Pancreatic cancerNo association: HR 0.96 (95% CI 0.83 to 1.11), 424,152 menAraghi 2017
All-cause death (never smokers)Higher: aHR 1.28 (95% CI 1.20 to 1.35), 169,103 menByhamre 2021
Cardiovascular death (never smokers)Higher: aHR 1.27 (95% CI 1.15 to 1.41)Byhamre 2021
Cancer death (never smokers)Possibly higher: aHR 1.12 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.26)Byhamre 2021

Some context matters here. These cohorts are observational and include only men. The cancer-specific pooled analyses (Araghi 2017, 2021) found no statistically meaningful link between snus use and oral or pancreatic cancer. But the all-cause and cardiovascular mortality data from Byhamre 2021 tell a different story: never-smoking men who used snus had a 28% higher risk of dying from any cause and a 27% higher risk of cardiovascular death, with risks climbing alongside duration of use.

A separate lab analysis (Back et al. 2023, funded by Swedish Match) found that the tobacco-specific nitrosamines NNN and NNK were 5 to 12 times lower in General snus than in two US moist snuff products. Two ZYN nicotine pouch products had no quantifiable nitrosamines. Lower is not zero, and it does not make snus risk-free.

The NCI states that smokeless tobacco as a general class causes oral cancer, esophageal cancer, and pancreatic cancer. The Swedish snus cohorts did not find the oral or pancreatic cancer link NCI describes for the class, but the cardiovascular and mortality signals remain. Who Should Not Use Snus

  • Anyone under 21: federal law sets 21 as the minimum age for buying any tobacco product.
  • People who don't currently use tobacco: the FDA states that "those who do not use tobacco products should not start" (FDA, ZYN MRTP).
  • Pregnant individuals: talk to your clinician before using any tobacco or nicotine product.
  • People with cardiovascular disease: the Byhamre 2021 data above link snus use to higher cardiovascular mortality in male never-smokers.
  • Anyone with persistent mouth sores or white patches: see a dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does snus mean?

Snus is the Swedish word for a moist oral tobacco product. The NCI gives the pronunciation as "snoose." In everyday use it usually means the pasteurized Swedish product placed under the upper lip, though NCI also uses it as another name for moist snuff, and "white snus" is sometimes used for nicotine pouches.

Is snus the same as ZYN?

No. Snus contains ground tobacco. ZYN is a tobacco-free nicotine pouch made with nicotine salt, plant fibers, and flavorings. Swedish Match manufactures both, but the products differ in composition, processing, and regulatory status. For a detailed side-by-side, see our snus vs ZYN comparison.

Can you buy snus in the United States?

Yes, adults 21 and older can buy snus legally. Eight General snus products are FDA-authorized and carry a modified-risk claim relative to cigarettes. Those orders expire November 7, 2032. Availability varies by retailer and state.

How many snus a day is normal?

The FDA does not define a safe daily amount. Its position: "There is no safe level of smokeless tobacco use." No pouch count is a safe or normal number by that standard.

Is snus safer than cigarettes?

The FDA's authorized claim for General snus is that using it instead of cigarettes puts users at lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. That is a relative comparison, not a safety endorsement. Byhamre 2021 found that male never-smokers who used snus still had a 28% higher all-cause mortality and 27% higher cardiovascular mortality versus non-users. Snus is not safe; it may be less harmful than smoking, which is a different statement.

The Lip Habit, Minus the Tobacco and Nicotine

A lip pouch is discreet and smokeless. For people who like that format but want neither tobacco nor nicotine, Roon fills the same spot under the lip with 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine) and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine).

If you are done with nicotine but still like a pouch tucked under your lip the way snus sits, try Roon. Methylliberine slows caffeine clearance: a randomized crossover PK study (n=12) found it extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours with no rise in peak concentration (study). That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, about 4x the methylliberine and 1.9x the caffeine in one Roon pouch, so the mechanism points the same direction but the magnitude differs, and a 15-hour half-life is not 15 hours of felt energy. Expect one pouch to carry you roughly 6 to 8 hours, with no jitters and no crash, and finish your last one at least 8 hours before sleep.

Roon is not a nicotine-replacement therapy and does not treat tobacco dependence. Tins start from $9.16 each, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on a first order.
