How to Use VELO Pouches, From Opening the Can to Disposal

Tuck one VELO pouch between your gum and lip, let it moisten for a few minutes, leave it in as long as you like within the brand's guidance, then drop it in the can's disposal lid or a trash can. Never swallow it. Below is every step VELO publishes on its US FAQ, with notes from the UK page and Northerner's guide where sources differ.

How do you open a VELO can?

US VELO PLUS and VELO MAX come in a large, child-resistant certified circular can with a disposal lid (VELO US FAQ). VELO does not publish step-by-step opening instructions; follow the directions printed on your lid. For the standard VELO line, the FAQ only says the can is circular and holds 20 pouches.

Note: the UK page says "Pop open" and Northerner's UK guide says "twist the lid." Both describe UK packaging, not the child-resistant US cans.

Where do you put a VELO pouch?

Between your gum and lip, per VELO's US FAQ. The UK page narrows it to "under your top lip." The pouch releases nicotine through the oral lining, which is why placement matters.

What should a VELO pouch feel like?

VELO's US FAQ says you "may feel a heat or tingling sensation in your mouth or throat." The UK page calls this "a heat and tingle sensation."

If it becomes uncomfortable, take the pouch out. VELO's stop-use language: discontinue if you feel nauseous or experience excessive heat or tingling in your mouth or throat (VELO US FAQ). More on the sensation: why nicotine pouches burn.

How long do you keep a VELO in?

VELO's US FAQ sets no time and says only that the length "will vary depending on your preferences and manner of use" (VELO US FAQ). The UK page says up to 30 minutes, and Northerner suggests 20 to 30 minutes, with up to 45 if preferred. The full answer, including how long the effect lasts, is in how long do VELO pouches last.

Can you swallow a VELO pouch or the juice?

No. VELO states its pouches "should not be swallowed in whole or in part during use" (VELO US FAQ). Related: what happens if you swallow a ZYN and can you swallow ZYN spit.

If a child or pet gets into the can, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (poison.org).

How do you dispose of VELO pouches?

Drop used pouches in the disposal lid or the nearest trash can (VELO US FAQ). VELO says packaging "may be recyclable in some areas." Northerner adds that pouches are not recyclable, though the empty can may be. Never flush a used pouch or drop it on the ground. More: are ZYNs biodegradable.

Troubleshooting

  • Excessive burn or tingling. Remove the pouch. VELO says to discontinue if heat or tingling is excessive or you feel nauseous.
  • Hiccups or nausea. Take it out. If nausea continues, do not use another pouch.
  • Dried-out pouch. Keep the lid closed between uses. Store cans cool and dry (Northerner).
  • Gum irritation. Persistent soreness is worth attention. Full guide: nicotine pouch gum health.

Before you use VELO

VELO is a nicotine product. Federal law under Tobacco 21 sets the minimum purchase age at 21. VELO's FAQ carries the warning: "This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical."

VELO's FAQ states its pouches are not intended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have or are at risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, or who take medicine for depression or asthma (VELO US FAQ). The same FAQ notes that nicotine can raise heart rate and blood pressure and can cause dizziness, nausea and stomach pain. Keep cans away from children and pets at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upper lip or lower lip?

VELO's US FAQ says "between your gum and lip" without saying which lip. VELO's UK page says "under your top lip" (VELO UK), and Northerner's guide also points to the upper lip. Neither brand page forbids the lower lip.

Can you use two VELO pouches at once?

VELO publishes no guidance on doubling up. Two pouches means twice the nicotine per session, and VELO's own stop-use language applies: remove both if you feel nauseous or experience excessive heat or tingling.

How should you store VELO pouches?

Keep the lid closed and the can somewhere cool and dry; Northerner gives that advice to preserve flavor (Northerner). VELO's US FAQ does not cover storage.

A Pouch With Nothing to Quit

Every step above applies to a nicotine pouch. If what you actually want from the ritual is focus, not nicotine, the same under-the-lip placement works with Roon, a zero-nicotine caffeine pouch.

Each Roon pouch holds 80 mg caffeine and 60 mg L-theanine, plus 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), which slows how fast the body clears caffeine. In a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12), methylliberine extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours with no rise in peak concentration (study). That study gave 100 mg methylliberine with 150 mg caffeine, about 4x and 1.9x what one Roon pouch contains, so the direction carries over but the size of the effect may not. A 15-hour half-life is also not 15 hours of felt energy; one pouch is designed to cover roughly six to eight hours. Finish your last pouch at least 8 hours before you plan to sleep, and keep to 4 pouches and 400 mg of caffeine a day from every source.

Five mg of theacrine (TeaCrine) rounds out the formula: no jitters, no crash. Roon costs from $9.16 per tin on a 12-tin subscription, and a 30-day money-back guarantee covers your first order. If you want to step away from nicotine pouches without giving up the under-the-lip ritual, Roon is the caffeine-only version of that habit.
