What Happens If You Swallow a Zyn? Adult, Child, Pet

If a teen or adult accidentally swallows one Zyn pouch, Poison Control says it will not cause serious toxicity. Rinse your mouth and watch for nausea or a racing heart. If a child swallows a pouch, or an adult swallows several, the guidance changes: get medical help now. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (free, 24/7) or use the webPOISONCONTROL online tool.

The rest of this page breaks down what to do based on who swallowed it, what symptoms to watch for, why children and pets face higher risk, and how to prevent it from happening again.

Call Now If You See These Signs

America's Poison Centers lists the severe-poisoning warning signs:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures

Mild symptoms include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, pale skin, sweating, rapid heart rate, and tremors.

Call 911 for breathing difficulty, a seizure, or unresponsiveness. Call 1-800-222-1222 for any other nicotine pouch ingestion, especially if a child swallowed the pouch, even with no symptoms yet. For more on the signs of too much nicotine, see what "nic sick" means and how to recognize it.

What Happens in Your Body After You Swallow a Zyn

A swallowed pouch can release nicotine and cause the symptoms of nicotine poisoning. Poison Control says heart rate and blood pressure go up first and then come down.

Poison Control's symptom list includes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drooling, watery eyes, sweating, tremor, and muscle weakness. America's Poison Centers adds pale skin and a rapid heart rate to its list of milder signs. Effects on the nervous system range from dizziness and confusion to, in severe cases, seizures and coma.

The pouch material itself is not digested. ZYN pouches contain fillers like microcrystalline cellulose, maltitol, and gum arabic. ZYN's Important Information page warns that a swallowed pouch may present a choking hazard.

Does a Used Pouch Hold Less Nicotine Than a Fresh One?

Yes. A fresh ZYN 6 mg pouch contains its full labeled dose. But in a 2020 pharmacokinetic study (Lunell et al., with a co-author from Swedish Match, the company that makes ZYN), a 6 mg ZYN released about 3.5 mg of nicotine into the mouth during normal use, and a 3 mg pouch released about 1.5 mg. That leaves roughly 2.5 mg in a used 6 mg pouch.

A used pouch carries less nicotine than a fresh one. That does not make a used pouch safe for a child or pet to swallow.

Why a Swallowed Pouch Is More Dangerous for a Child

A child's body is far smaller, so the same pouch is a much bigger dose for their weight. Poison Control's wording changes accordingly: for a child, "toxicity is possible."

Poison center data shows how often it happens. A 2025 study in Pediatrics (Central Ohio Poison Center, Nationwide Children's Hospital) found that nicotine pouch ingestions among children under 6 rose 763% from 2020 to 2023. Pouches were more likely than other nicotine forms (gum, lozenges, e-liquids) to be linked to serious outcomes or hospital admission. Most ingestions involved children under 2, and most happened at home.

Separately, America's Poison Centers reported in September 2025 that nicotine pouch exposure cases climbed 202% from 2022 to 2024, with a further 91.7% year-over-year increase through August 2025. Children under 6 accounted for 73.1% of those exposures.

What If Your Dog Ate a Zyn?

The Pet Poison Helpline describes nicotine as a rapidly acting toxin with a narrow safety margin in pets. Signs of nicotine poisoning in dogs and cats include drooling, vomiting, abnormal heart rate and blood pressure, tremor, agitation, stupor, collapse, and shallow breathing.

Pet Poison Helpline also notes that some nicotine products contain xylitol, which is separately toxic to dogs. ZYN's own ingredient list names maltitol and acesulfame K as sweeteners, not xylitol, but always confirm with your vet.

Call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (a fee applies). Do not wait for symptoms.

How to Keep It From Happening Again

ZYN's own guidance: keep pouches out of reach of children at all times and store and dispose of them where children cannot access them. America's Poison Centers echoes this: "Keep nicotine pouches and all nicotine products stored away from children."

Practical steps:

  • Close the can lid between uses.
  • Drop spent pouches into the lid's disposal compartment, then into a sealed trash bin.
  • Treat tins like medication: store them up and away, never on a counter or nightstand where a child or pet can reach.

For a fuller walkthrough of pouch placement and disposal, see the how to use Zyn guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a swallowed Zyn pass through you?

The pouch is made of fillers and binders such as microcrystalline cellulose and hydroxypropyl cellulose, and your body does not digest it. ZYN warns that a swallowed pouch may present a choking hazard. No reliable source gives a specific transit time, so do not assume a timeline.

Should I make myself throw up after swallowing a Zyn?

No published guidance from Poison Control or ZYN recommends inducing vomiting on your own. Call 1-800-222-1222 and let a specialist tell you what to do next.

What if I swallowed a caffeine pouch instead of a nicotine pouch?

A caffeine pouch delivers caffeine, not nicotine. Count it toward the 400 mg a day the FDA cites for most healthy adults. If a child swallows any caffeine pouch, call Poison Control as well; a small body gets a much larger dose for its weight.

Can swallowing a Zyn give you hiccups or nausea?

Yes. Nausea and vomiting are on Poison Control's symptom list for nicotine poisoning. Hiccups are often reported with nicotine pouches too, likely from swallowed nicotine saliva and nicotine's effect on the nerves behind the hiccup reflex. More on that in the Zyn hiccups explainer.

A Pouch With No Nicotine to Swallow

This page is about a nicotine accident. Roon does not fix that, and it is not a nicotine replacement therapy.

What Roon is: a zero-nicotine caffeine pouch that adults place under the lip, the same way they would a Zyn. The active list is short: 80 mg caffeine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), 60 mg L-theanine and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine). The methylliberine is there for duration. In a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12), adding it cut caffeine's oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr and stretched its half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours, with no higher peak. That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, roughly 4x and 1.9x what one Roon pouch contains, so Roon shares the direction of the effect, not the study's numbers, and a 15-hour half-life is not 15 hours of felt energy. One pouch is meant to carry you for roughly 6 to 8 hours, so leave at least 8 hours between the last pouch and bedtime, and use no more than 4 in a day.

Roon is still a caffeine product, so store tins where children cannot reach them, the same as any pouch. Roon costs from $9.16 per tin on a 12-tin subscription.
