How to Use ZYN: Placement, Timing and Disposal

How to Use ZYN: Placement, Timing and Disposal
ZYN's US instructions: place one pouch between your upper lip and gum for up to one hour, then throw it away. Never chew it. Never swallow the pouch itself; swallowing saliva is fine. ZYN's UK guide shortens the window to around 30 minutes, and Poison Control recommends 5 to 15 minutes when you first start.
Before You Start
ZYN describes its pouches as "smoke-free, spit-free and hands-free," but each can carries the warning "Nicotine is an addictive chemical." The pouches contain nicotine salt (nicotine bitartrate dihydrate) plus food-grade fillers like microcrystalline cellulose, maltitol, and gum arabic (ZYN US FAQ). ZYN is intended for adults 21 and older under federal Tobacco 21 law. As ZYN's own FAQ puts it: if you do not currently use nicotine, ZYN is not for you. For the absorption mechanism behind any oral nicotine pouch, see how nicotine pouches work.

Where Do You Put a ZYN?
Between your upper lip and gum, per ZYN's own directions. The UK guide adds to position the pouch so it stays in place comfortably. ZYN does not specify left side, right side, or center. You may feel a mild tingling after placement; the ZYN UK guide calls this normal and says it is part of the experience. If you want more on why that tingle happens, see why nicotine pouches burn.
How Long Should You Keep a ZYN In?
Up to one hour, according to ZYN's US FAQ. ZYN's UK page says around 30 minutes. The gap matters less than it seems: Poison Control sets a hard ceiling of 60 minutes and suggests 5 to 15 minutes when you first start using nicotine pouches.
A 2020 pharmacokinetic study co-authored by ZYN's maker found that a single ZYN pouch extracted roughly 56% of its nicotine at 3 mg and 59% at 6 mg during use. For the 8 mg pouch, the extracted fraction was about 50%. For a broader look at pouch timing across brands, see how long do ZYNs last.
Do You Spit or Swallow with ZYN?
ZYN says you may naturally swallow saliva while using a pouch, but the pouch itself should not be swallowed (ZYN US FAQ). There is no need to spit. For a deeper look at what happens if you do swallow saliva or experience hiccups and nausea, see can you swallow ZYN spit.
If a teen or adult accidentally swallows a single pouch, Poison Control says it will not cause serious toxicity. If a child swallows one, toxicity is possible: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.
How to Open a ZYN Can
Every ZYN can has a child-resistant lid. The process, per ZYN: break the perforation on the side label, twist to line up the arrows on the top and bottom of the can, then lift. Store cans at room temperature. High heat or humidity over time can reduce the pouch's performance, and you should use them before the "best before" date printed on the bottom of the can.
Which ZYN Strength Is Which?
Standard ZYN is sold on zyn.com in 1.5, 3, 6, and 8 mg nicotine per pouch. ZYN Ultra, a separate line with a moist "hydro-boosted" format, comes in 9 mg and 11 mg strengths. The FDA's authorized nicotine pouch list covers 10 flavors each of ZYN 3 mg and 6 mg, plus 11 ZYN Ultra products; it does not include ZYN 1.5 mg or 8 mg.
ZYN's FAQ says each standard can holds 15 pouches; ZYN Ultra cans hold 20. For the full count breakdown, see how many pouches in a ZYN can. For what each level means, see ZYN strengths explained.
When to Take It Out
Stop using a pouch and remove it if you experience irritation or dizziness, per Poison Control. Nausea, vomiting, sweating, and tremor are on Poison Control's list of nicotine-poisoning symptoms. If any of these appear, remove the pouch immediately.
For more on these symptoms, see nic sick from nicotine pouches.
Who Should Not Use ZYN
- Anyone under 21. Federal Tobacco 21 law makes it illegal for retailers to sell any tobacco product, including nicotine pouches, to anyone under 21.
- Anyone who does not already use nicotine. ZYN's FAQ states this directly. The FDA adds: adults who do not use tobacco products should not start.
- Pregnant individuals or those with heart conditions. Talk to a clinician before using any nicotine product.
- Children. Keep cans and used pouches away from children at all times. Use sealed disposal containers.
FDA authorization of ZYN does not mean these products are safe, nor are they "FDA approved" (FDA, Jan 2025). For help quitting nicotine, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you reuse a ZYN pouch?
No. ZYN's US FAQ says its pouches are single use only and should never be reused. Throw each one away when you take it out.
Can you sleep with a ZYN in?
ZYN does not publish guidance on sleeping with a pouch in place. Poison Control's recommendation of no more than 60 minutes per session applies regardless of the time of day. No published guidance supports leaving a pouch in overnight.
Does ZYN need to be refrigerated?
No. ZYN recommends room-temperature storage. High temperatures or humidity over extended periods can reduce the pouch's performance, but standard indoor conditions are fine. Use the pouches before the "best before" date on the bottom of each can.
Can you use ZYN on a plane?
ZYN's own FAQ does not cover flying. For the carry-on and in-flight rules, see can you bring nicotine pouches on a plane.
Same Lip, No Nicotine
If the format works for you, parking a pouch under your lip during a shift or a drive, but you want to leave nicotine behind, Roon keeps the ritual and drops the nicotine entirely. It is a zero-nicotine oral pouch (Cool Mint, 15 per tin) with 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine).
The caffeine is a small-coffee dose, yet the felt window stretches to 6 to 8 hours. Methylliberine slows caffeine clearance: a randomized, double-blind crossover study (n=12) found co-dosing the two extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours with no higher peak (study). That trial used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, about 4x and 1.9x Roon's per-pouch doses, so the mechanism applies directionally, not at the study's exact magnitude. And 15 hours of half-life is a clearance metric, not 15 hours of energy.
Caffeine has its own ceiling: no more than 4 Roon pouches a day, under 400 mg a day from all sources, and a last pouch 8 or more hours before bed. Roon starts from $9.16 per tin, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on a first order. It is a caffeine pouch, not a nicotine replacement therapy.
