What Does Zyn Do? From the Lip to the Brain
Zyn is a nicotine pouch. Place it under your upper lip, and nicotine passes through the lining of your mouth into your blood, then to your brain. There it raises dopamine in the brain's reward circuits, producing a short buzz, while raising heart rate and blood pressure. Repeat that cycle often enough and the brain adapts, which is why skipping a pouch brings cravings.
How Does Zyn Get Nicotine Into Your Body?
Zyn delivers nicotine through the oral mucosa, not through smoke or tobacco leaf. According to Zyn's own directions, you place the pouch between your upper lip and gum for up to one hour.
How much gets through? A 2020 pharmacokinetic study in Nicotine & Tobacco Research measured it across ZYN pouches at 3, 6, and 8 mg: subjects extracted 50% to 59% of the labeled nicotine per use (Lunell et al., 2020). The higher-strength pouches (6 and 8 mg) delivered nicotine "as quickly and to a similar extent as existing smokeless products." One study author is affiliated with Swedish Match, ZYN's manufacturer. US ZYN strengths include 1.5, 3, 6, 9 and 11 mg per pouch, with 9 and 11 mg sold as ZYN Ultra.
How Zyn Works, Step by Step
| Step | What happens | The number | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| In the lip | Pouch sits between upper lip and gum, releasing nicotine | Up to one hour per use | Zyn directions |
| Into the blood | Nicotine crosses the oral mucosa | 50% to 59% of pouch nicotine extracted (ZYN 3, 6, 8 mg) | Lunell et al. 2020 |
| In the brain | Dopamine rises in reward circuits; brief euphoria | Brain adapts with repeated exposure | NIDA |
| Heart | Heart rate and blood pressure rise | ~12 bpm (20 mg pouch), ~25 bpm (30 mg) vs ~27 bpm (cigarette), n=15 | Mallock-Ohnesorg et al. 2024 |
| Mouth | Local irritation | Reported with all pouches tested | Mallock-Ohnesorg et al. 2024 |
| After | Cravings when nicotine wears off | Irritability, craving, anxiety, depression | NIDA |
The Mallock-Ohnesorg pouches were 6, 20, and 30 mg European products tested in 15 smokers. US ZYN ranges from 1.5 to 11 mg, so the 20 and 30 mg figures above do not tell you the response at US strengths.
What Does the Zyn Buzz Feel Like, and Why Does It Fade?
The buzz is a brief lift in mood and alertness, not intoxication. NIDA describes nicotine's initial euphoria as brief, and ties it to nicotine raising dopamine in the brain's reward circuits.
First-time users feel more because the brain has not yet adapted. With repeated use, those circuits change their sensitivity to dopamine, so the same dose produces less effect. That adaptation is also why regular users feel irritable or anxious without a pouch. For more on timing, see how long Zyns last.
What Does Zyn Do to Your Heart?
Nicotine raises heart rate and blood pressure regardless of delivery method. In the Mallock-Ohnesorg et al. 2024 trial, the increase was dose-dependent: about 12 bpm with a 20 mg pouch, about 25 bpm with a 30 mg pouch, and about 27 bpm with a cigarette. Benowitz & Burbank (2016) summarize the broader picture: cardiovascular risks from nicotine without combustion are low compared to smoking but "still of concern in people with cardiovascular disease."
What Zyn Doesn't Do
No tobacco leaf, no smoke. ZYN pouches are tobacco leaf-free. The FDA has stated that most serious health harms come from chemicals in tobacco smoke, not nicotine itself, though nicotine does change the brain and drive addiction.
No caffeine, no proven focus benefit. ZYN describes its pouches as nicotine plus flavoring ingredients, with no caffeine listed. Whether nicotine helps focus is a separate and unsettled question; see what the cognitive evidence on nicotine shows.
Not "FDA approved." The FDA authorized 20 ZYN products for marketing in January 2025 and granted modified-risk orders for 20 standard ZYN products (3 mg and 6 mg) on June 30, 2026. The authorized claim: "Using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis." That claim covers only those 20 products, only vs. cigarettes, and authorization does not mean these products are safe.
Side Effects and Safety
Common effects include mouth irritation (reported with all pouches in Mallock-Ohnesorg 2024), dose-dependent heart-rate increases, and withdrawal symptoms (irritability, craving, anxiety, depression) when regular users go without (NIDA). Nicotine pouch ingestions among children under 6 rose 763% from 2020 to 2023, with serious outcomes more likely (OR 1.53) than other nicotine product ingestions (Olivas et al., Pediatrics 2025). For a fuller breakdown, see side effects of Zyn pouches.
Who should not use Zyn: anyone under 21 (Zyn.com is 21+), pregnant or breastfeeding individuals (CDC), people with cardiovascular disease (talk to your clinician), and anyone who does not already use nicotine. Keep cans away from children. If a child swallows a pouch, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If you want to stop using nicotine, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zyn get you high?
Not in the way most people mean. NIDA describes nicotine's initial euphoria as brief. Regular users feel even less because the brain's reward circuits adapt. The sensation is closer to a quick mood lift than intoxication.
What happens if you swallow a Zyn pouch?
Pouches are not designed to be swallowed. For children, the risk is serious: pouch ingestions among kids under 6 rose over 760% from 2020 to 2023 (Olivas et al., 2025). If a child swallows a nicotine pouch, call Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222.
Why does Zyn burn or tingle?
ZYN does not publish a specific explanation. In clinical studies, mouth irritation was reported with all nicotine pouches tested (Mallock-Ohnesorg et al., 2024).
Can you use Zyn and caffeine together?
Both nicotine and caffeine are stimulants that raise heart rate. We found no published safety data on combining Zyn with caffeine. The FDA's guideline for healthy adults is a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine per day from all sources. If you have questions about mixing stimulants, talk to your clinician.
Keep the Pouch, Drop the Nicotine
The path above, from lip to dopamine to cravings, is nicotine's path. If you like the format but nicotine itself is what you want to leave behind, that is the gap Roon fills. Same ritual: a Cool Mint pouch under the lip, onset in 5 to 10 minutes. Different active: 80 mg caffeine, 60 mg L-theanine, 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine), and 5 mg theacrine (TeaCrine), with zero nicotine.
Roon is designed for a 6 to 8 hour felt window on a single-coffee dose of caffeine, and methylliberine is the reason: it slows how fast caffeine is cleared. A randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12) found it extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours with no increase in peak concentration (study). That study used 100 mg methylliberine and 150 mg caffeine, about 4x and 1.9x what one Roon pouch delivers, so the mechanism applies directionally, not at the study's exact magnitude. Caffeine carries its own constraints: no more than 4 pouches a day, a total of 400 mg a day from all sources, and your last pouch eight hours before sleep.
Roon does not treat nicotine cravings or withdrawal. It is a caffeine pouch, not a therapy. If what you like about ZYN is the pouch ritual rather than the nicotine, try Roon, from $9.16 per tin.
