Electrolyte Pouches: What ZALT Holds vs a Drink Mix

Electrolyte pouches are nicotine-free lip pouches that release salts and B vitamins while you hold them between your lip and gum. ZALT, which calls itself the first, lists 55 mg of sodium per pouch (2% of the Daily Value), 15 pouches per can, $9.99 a can. TRGT and Grinds also list electrolyte pouches on their stores; this page focuses on ZALT because it publishes a full label. A single LMNT drink-mix stick contains 1,000 mg of sodium. ZALT itself says a pouch is not a water replacement.

How We Compared

Every number here comes from brand labels, product pages and FAQs, linked so you can check them, and the per-serving figures are simple division from those numbers. None of these products went through lab testing or use-testing for this page. Roon, which publishes it, sells a caffeine pouch rather than an electrolyte product, and links to it below.

What Is an Electrolyte Pouch?

A lip pouch in the same format as a nicotine pouch, except the fill is electrolyte salts and B vitamins instead of nicotine. ZALT calls itself "the first ever Electrolyte + B Vitamin Pouch," announced its launch February 16, 2026, and announced a new formula and flavors on September 15, 2026.

If you meant drink-mix packets such as LMNT, those are a different format. We cover drink-mix electrolytes in our electrolytes and fasting guide.

What's in a ZALT Pouch?

ZALT's product page lists per pouch: "372 mg active electrolytes", made up of sodium citrate 190 mg, potassium citrate 157 mg and French sea salt 25 mg, plus vitamin B6 0.6 mg and vitamin B12 20 mcg. Other ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, natural flavor, xylitol, MCT oil and stevia leaf extract. ZALT says the pouches are sugar-free. One label quirk: a footnote says "Cool Mint skips the sea salt", yet the same panel lists 25 mg.

The 190 mg is the weight of the whole sodium citrate compound, not the sodium in it. ZALT's FAQ gives the sodium itself: 55 mg per pouch (2% DV), plus 60 mg of potassium.

Do Electrolyte Pouches Work for Hydration?

Water hydrates you. A pouch adds a small dose of sodium. ZALT's FAQ is blunt: "ZALT is not a water replacement." Directions say to "drink water normally" while using a pouch. ZALT publishes no study on whether any of the electrolytes are absorbed through the mouth, so this page makes no claim either way. How Much Sodium Is That, Really?

Pouches needed to match one LMNT stick: 1,000 mg / 55 mg = 18.2 pouches.

MeasureAmount
Sodium per ZALT pouch55 mg
Sodium per LMNT stick1,000 mg
ZALT pouches to equal one LMNT stick18.2
Sodium from 3 ZALT pouches/day165 mg (7.2% of the 2,300 mg DV)
Sodium from 6 ZALT pouches/day330 mg (14.3% of DV)
Average American daily sodium intake~3,400 mg (FDA)

At ZALT's own suggested 3 to 6 per day, you add 165 to 330 mg of sodium. The FDA's Daily Value is under 2,300 mg, and Americans already eat about 3,400 mg a day on average, so most people are not short on sodium. Athletes and heavy sweaters may differ, but that conversation belongs with a sports dietitian.

Electrolyte Pouches Like Zyn: Same Format, Different Job

The physical experience is familiar. ZALT's directions: "place a ZALT pouch between your lip and gums," "Do not chew the pouch or spit." ZALT says most people keep one in for 30 to 45 minutes, and it has zero nicotine and zero caffeine. Same lip placement as ZYN, different contents entirely. ZYN delivers nicotine, Roon delivers caffeine, ZALT delivers electrolyte salts. None substitutes for the others. See our full nicotine-free pouch comparison and ZYN alternatives breakdown.

Which One Fits?

  • Nicotine-free lip pouch with light sodium: ZALT, 55 mg sodium, $0.67/pouch.
  • Electrolyte replacement after heavy sweating: LMNT, 1,000 mg sodium per stick.
  • Steady energy in a pouch: Roon, 80 mg caffeine, felt for about 6 to 8 hours, from $0.61/pouch.
  • Caffeine-free focus pouch: see our TRGT pouches review.

Who Should Ask a Doctor First

If you have kidney disease, heart failure or high blood pressure, or take blood-pressure medication that affects potassium, ask a doctor before adding sodium or potassium supplements. ZALT's label says the same: talk to a doctor if pregnant, nursing, on medication, or managing a medical condition. ZALT is sold as a dietary supplement, and its site notes: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration."

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ZALT have caffeine?

No. ZALT's FAQ says: "ZALT is completely caffeine-free." The label lists electrolyte salts, B6 and B12, with no stimulant.

Does ZALT contain nicotine?

No. Per ZALT's FAQ: "There is zero nicotine in ZALT, synthetic or otherwise."

How many ZALT pouches can you use per day?

ZALT's product page says most customers enjoy 2 to 4 per day; the FAQ says 3 to 6. At 55 mg sodium each, 6 pouches add 330 mg, about 14% of the 2,300 mg Daily Value.

How long does an electrolyte pouch last in your lip?

ZALT says 30 to 45 minutes per pouch. Directions say to keep drinking water while the pouch is in.

Are electrolyte pouches FDA approved?

ZALT is sold as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved drug. Its label carries the standard disclaimer: "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

When the Pouch Needs to Carry the Afternoon

An electrolyte pouch adds a little salt. If what you need is energy that holds through the back half of the day, that requires a different formula.

Roon pairs 80 mg caffeine with 25 mg methylliberine (Dynamine) and 60 mg L-theanine in a zero-nicotine, zero-sugar pouch that sits in the lip. Methylliberine slows caffeine clearance: a randomized, double-blind crossover PK study (n=12) found co-dosing extended caffeine's half-life from 7.2 to 15 hours and reduced oral clearance from 41.9 to 17.1 L/hr, with no higher peak (study). That trial dosed 100 mg methylliberine with 150 mg caffeine, about 4x and 1.9x what one Roon pouch contains, so the mechanism points the same direction without matching the exact numbers. The 15-hour half-life is a clearance figure, not perceived duration; a single pouch is felt for roughly 6 to 8 hours, starting within 5 to 10 minutes.

Timing matters with a longer tail: wrap up your last pouch 8 or more hours before sleep, and keep drinking water as usual. Roon costs from $9.16 per tin. It is not an electrolyte product, not a hydration tool and not a nicotine replacement. If energy is what the pouch needs to deliver, give it a look.
